Acne at its finest

Why God why am I getting acne? Im ______ years old, way past my teenage years. This is just cruel. YUP it most certainly is girlfriend! Because acne sees no age. You may have slid past the hormonal teenage acne years and BOOM, you turn 25 and you have a face full of painful cystic pimples. Or you had some teenage acne, got it under control and BOOM you turn 40 and sister is dealing with fine lines AND acne. Whatever your situation or scenario may be, there is a reason, but most importantly a SOLUTION!

Let's talk hormones. No I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV (although that sounds amazing). But I am a woman who happens to be a 16 year aesthetician who has dealt with and fixed my own and hundreds of others acne issues. Hormones play a HUGE part in what our skin is doing. Whether its your period, pregnancy, menopause, birth control - starting, stopping, switching, whatever hormonal fluctuation is happening internally will affect the outcome of your skin. Lovely right? Sense my sarcasm? It's great being a woman.

So once you have established the root of your hormonal upset, you can start the healing process. Even though you can't change the fact that you're pregnant, going through menopause or just a hormonal shift there's still a solution.

So since the beginning of time when dealing with acne we were taught to

dry it up, dry it up

scrub scrub scrub

Kill it dead. Which yes, we want it to go away, but by causing more trauma and irritation to the breakouts it will cause them to

Get worse

Spread

Overstay its visit

How many times have you tried to tackle your acne and end up red, raw, and dry? And STILL have acne? But this goes against everything we've been taught! I know girl I know. Instead of planning WW3 on your face, we need to approach the issue in a much gentler manner. Since hormonal acne is a whole other ballpark, less is more. Cleansing daily with a gentle cleanser, applying an SPF moisturizer (no the spf in your makeup is NOT enough), applying a retinol based product 1-3 days a week (at night), and moisturizing before bed. You can also incorporate exfoliating 2-3 times a week (on the off nights of the retinol) and applying a mask once a week. Depending on the severity of your hormonal acne, you may also want to seek guidance from a dermatologist for a hormone balancing antibiotic/medication. And for heavens sake, stop picking/popping your breakouts at home. Chances are it is more of a cystic pimple that when you try to pop it, nothing comes out except clear liquid. not popable. Hands down!

What about the different types of acne?

Can we go back to the "kill method" we know so well? NO! The same method applies to the different types of acne but tweaked to customize to that type. For more oily acne with more bacteria, cleansing with a cleanser containing glycolic and/or salicylic acid is recommended 1-2 times a day. Still applying an SPF moisturizer daily. A retinol based product at night 2-3 times a week, and a nightly moisturizer. If your skin gets dry from the exfoliating ingredients or the climate of where you live, you can cleanse in the morning with a gentle cleanser and an exfoliating (gly/sal) cleanser at night.

What if I don't get the results I want?

Chances are you'll get a great result in the reduction and reoccurrence of those pesky breakouts. But there might be a chance you may need extra help, and that's OK! Seeking help from a highly skilled Aesthetician at a medical spa will help guide you to a service or 2 that will take your results to the next level. Products alone will NOT get rid of blackheads, white heads, and milia. Chances are you will need a facial with medical grade extractions to physically remove them. That way the products you are using will work that much better! It won't just be sitting on top of a blackhead.

Product Recommendations:

Now does this mean that you should be using 1 of each of these recommended products and using them everyday multiple times a day? NOPE! Remember we want to approach the acne in a much more gentle fashion versus trying to light a stick of dynamite to our faces.
