Cleansing brushes are everywhere. Just like the millions of different skincare products. Are they worth it? Do they actually work? Will it hurt? Well I'm here to tell you! I will be diving into a few different skincare tools over the next few weeks and telling you if they're worth it or not!
Back in the early 2000's a well known cleansing brush hit the market and made waves in the skincare industry. A deeper cleanse, exfoliate the acne away, polished skin with every use, 10x more effective cleansing. All the claims. The marketing was amazing. Well it feels good, my skin is super soft, it must be working! Too good to be true right? The bristles tend to be extremely abrasive. Some brushes even come with other attachments that are even more aggressive. And many of the consumers mindset is, Be aggressive B. E. aggressive. SCRUB SCRUB SCRUB.
If you have watched my videos on IGTV (if not head over and check them out) about acne, exfoliating, dry vs. dehydrated, and even maskne, you'll know that over stimulating the skin will cause such an imbalance that you will not only make things worse, you will go backwards in your results. While exfoliating is a beautiful thing, exfoliating too often can be so harmful. And if you're using products for acne (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, micro-beads, etc.) with a cleansing brush daily, results will be far far away.
Like skincare products, one size does NOT fit all. The same goes for cleansing brushes. If you have your heart set on some type of cleansing brush device, my recommendation to you would be the Foreo Luna Cleansing Device. The Swedish beauty brand has silicone bristles that are super gentle, even for sensitive skin. The device emits T-Sonic pulsations to work your cleanser and even serums. After you cleanse, flip the device to the smooth side and the vibrations help your serum and/or facial oil penetrate deeper. But like I said before, on a daily basis may be too much. So the best way to find the perfect protocol for you is to start using the device once a week. If you find that it is tolerated well, you could bump it up to twice a week. Using the Foreo with a gentle CREAMY cleanser is also recommended. Remember, using all the exfoliating products at once will not get you results faster. It will irritate your skin and hinder your results.
If you have active acne or cystic acne, you may want to hold off on a cleansing device. Using a cleansing device can irritate acne and even open up pustules and spread bacteria. If you have received any type of facial injections, botox, or filler, you will have to wait 2 weeks before doing any type of facial manipulation. That includes receiving facial treatments and using at home facial tools.
Like anything, doing "at home" treatments can be risky. So proceed with caution and don't over-do it! Remember, less is more, except when we are talking wine and chocolate ;)
